SERC Public Housing Basketball
History
The Alabama Association of Housing and Redevelopment Authorities (AAHRA) and the Birmingham Office of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) have a close relationship in promoting housing needs and improving the quality of life of public housing residents.
- 1992: Together, AAHRA and HUD created the Public Housing Youth Sports Program.
- 1995: AAHRA entered into a partnership with the Alabama Sports Festival to further develop the goals and objectives of the Public Housing Youth Sports Program.
- 2009: AAHRA, the Alabama Sports Festival and Partners In Neighborhood Growth (PING) hosted an expanded Southeast Regional Council (SERC) basketball tournament, open to ten states in the Southeast.
Public Housing Objectives
- To give the residents of each Housing Authority the opportunity to play organized sports and other activities which allow the individual to grow mentally, physically, spiritually and socially.
- To create a healthy competitive attitude, to learn the value of teamwork, to increase self-esteem and leadership qualities for all who participate in youth sports activities.
- To provide positive examples and role models for those who participate in youth sports activities.
- To provide an alternative to illegal drug activities, involvement in criminal acts, and association with known criminal gang members, for the residents of each Housing Authority.
- To provide adequate physical exercise and a proper knowledge of the rules and skills needed to play a particular sport.

- Remember the MANDATORY coaches meeting at UAH University Fitness Center on Saturday, Jan. 16th at 8:00 AM CST. Players do not have to be present as the gyms will not be open for shoot around.
